The Best Picture Books

The Best Picture Books I’ve got animal tales, a sing-songy baseball adventure, and two striking, multicultural tales to share with you.  Pick them up wherever you like to get your picture books and don’t forget to share them with someone you love. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin introduces subtraction with almost a slight of hand.  Your kids will be so busy singing along with Pete’s new song, they won’t realize the math they are absorbing. A winning read-aloud. Maudie and Bear by Jan Ormerod & Freya Blackwood melted my heart a little!  Maudie is the star of these five...

Pack your book bag!

Pack your book bag! As summer is winding to a close you might be going on that last minute vacation or mini road trip. A great way to keep your children occupied in the car or on the plane is to pack a bag full of books. If I were to pack a bag full of books for a kiddie to take in the car or on the plane at the moment, I’d grab these four. It’s a diverse group for pre-schoolers and toddlers. Chloe, Instead by Micah Player – Vivid colors and sister-camaraderie are just two of the reasons to pick up this new picture book.  Molly’s sister, Chloe, is nothing like her, but they forge a special bond...

Reading to Baby

Reading to Baby I have to keep reminding myself to bring kids’ books home and read them to my belly.  It’s so easy to preach the importance of connecting with your baby in this way, but taking the time out is another story!  There is always something else to do, like washing cute new outfits, trying to make sense of cloth diapers before she gets her, and assembling baby gear.  I’ve read to her from the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, but I do my best read-alouds with books like those below.  I vow I’m going to follow my own advice and take some...

Old Books vs. New Books The question I have for you today is this: New Books or Old Books? Old or used books tell two stories simultaneously—the story in words and the story of popsicles eaten, well-loved passages, and trips to the beach. Yet, anyone who knows me knows my vote. I could go on and on about the way new books smell, the way the pages flip, the beauty of an unbroken spine. As a child, I rarely opened my new books more than a crack, because I wanted to “leave no trace.” A librarian in the making, to be sure! If you and your child are looking for something new to read, check out any of the gorgeous, new books below...

The Latest in Picture Books

The Latest in Picture Books A big shipment of the latest picture books came in today.  Is there anything better?  I love being the first one to crack the spines on these.  All of these are great read-aloud material.  They are librarian-tested!  So check them out at your local library or pick them up on Amazon.  You won’t regret it. Hey Little Baby! by Heather Leigh – A gentle sensory-focused greeting for your brand new baby.  Baby might not process it, but mom and dad could be in tears after this one! Me Want Pet! by Tammi Sauer – This cave fellow wants nothing more than a pet to keep him company.  Wooly...
